7 Easy Ways to Make Your Airbnb Feel Cozy This Fall

There’s something about an Airbnb that feels completely different once summer is over.

During the warmer months, guests usually spend much more time outside. They might barely notice whether there’s a blanket on the sofa or a cosy lamp in the corner.

But once the days get shorter and the weather turns cooler, those little details suddenly start to matter much more.

After a long day of sightseeing in the rain or coming back to the apartment on a chilly evening, it’s lovely to walk into a space that feels warm and comfortable.

The good news is that you don’t need to completely redecorate your Airbnb every autumn. And you certainly don’t need pumpkins on every surface.

A few simple seasonal changes can make the whole space feel warmer and more inviting, while still keeping the style of your property.

Here are seven easy ways to make your Airbnb feel a little cosier this fall.

1. Start With Textiles

Textiles are probably the easiest place to start because you can change the feeling of a room without changing very much at all.

A soft throw over the sofa or an armchair immediately makes the room feel more inviting. You could also swap a few cushion covers for warmer colours or textures, or use slightly heavier bedding once the nights become cooler.

For autumn, I especially like earthy colours such as terracotta, rust, ochre, olive and warm brown.

You don’t need to use all of them, of course.

Even one or two warmer shades mixed with cream, beige or white can bring a little autumn colour into the room without making it feel too dark.

I would also focus more on texture than obvious autumn patterns. A chunky knitted throw, soft wool or textured linen can make a space feel cosy without adding lots of seasonal decorations.

There is one practical thing to keep in mind, though.

This is still an Airbnb, so anything you add needs to survive regular guest stays and frequent washing. I would always choose textiles that are easy to wash and don’t need too much special care.

2. Warm Up the Lighting

Lighting is one of those things that is easy to overlook, but it can completely change how a room feels.

As the days become shorter, guests will naturally spend more time in the apartment with the lights on. Warm-toned bulbs can make the space feel much softer in the evening, especially compared with very cool white lighting.

It also helps to have several smaller sources of light instead of relying entirely on one ceiling light.

A table lamp beside the sofa, a floor lamp in a reading corner or proper bedside lamps can make a surprisingly big difference.

At the same time, make sure the lighting is actually useful.

A bedside lamp should still be bright enough to read by, and guests shouldn’t have to switch on every light in the room just to see what they’re doing.

If you like decorative lighting, a few LED candles can also look lovely during autumn. However, I wouldn’t add too many fairy lights or other seasonal lights unless they genuinely suit the style of your property.

Sometimes making a room feel cosier is less about adding more decoration and more about simply getting the lighting right.

3. Bring in Autumn Colours Without Changing Your Whole Interior

You don’t need fall-themed wall art or a completely new collection of decorations to make your Airbnb feel more seasonal.

Often, a few warmer colours are enough.

A terracotta cushion on a neutral sofa, a warm brown throw, a ceramic vase or a few natural wooden details can subtly change the feeling of the room while still working with the interior you already have.

If you’re not sure which colours to combine, here are three simple palettes that work beautifully for autumn:

  • Terracotta + cream + warm wood
  • Olive + beige + brown
  • Ochre + soft white + natural linen

Whichever colours you choose, I would let the existing interior guide you.

For example, there’s no reason to suddenly add lots of orange simply because it’s autumn if your Airbnb is already decorated in soft greens and warm neutrals.

The seasonal details should still feel like they belong in the property.

4. Add a Few Natural Seasonal Details

Natural elements are another easy way to bring some of the season indoors without making the space feel overly decorated.

A vase with a few branches or dried flowers can be enough. You could also add a bowl of apples or pears to the kitchen, a couple of small pumpkins on a shelf, or a simple autumn wreath by the entrance.

Personally, I think less is usually better here.

You don’t need a wreath, pumpkins, dried flowers, pine cones and a garland all at once. Choose one or two places where a seasonal detail makes sense and leave the rest of the room as it is.

There is also a practical hosting reason for keeping things simple.

Every decorative object eventually becomes something that needs to be cleaned, moved and put back during a turnover. If you have ever prepared an Airbnb between guests, you probably know how quickly all those little extra jobs add up.

A few carefully chosen details can give you the same cosy feeling with much less work.

5. Create a Cozy Autumn Welcome

The little things guests find when they arrive can feel especially thoughtful during the colder months.

You could leave a small selection of tea, good coffee or hot chocolate in the kitchen. A bowl of seasonal fruit such as apples or pears works nicely too.

And if you normally leave a welcome treat for your guests, you could choose something local that suits the season.

None of this needs to turn into an elaborate welcome basket.

Imagine arriving after travelling all day, putting your bags down and finding everything you need to make a hot cup of tea.

It’s a very small thing, but at that moment it can feel wonderful.

I think this is true for so many details in an Airbnb. Guests don’t necessarily notice how much something cost. They notice that someone thought about what might make their stay a little more comfortable.

6. Think About Rainy Evenings Too

Once autumn arrives, guests are more likely to spend at least some of their holiday indoors.

Of course, they probably didn’t book your Airbnb because they were planning to sit inside all evening. But the weather doesn’t always cooperate.

That’s why it’s worth thinking about what they can do if they come home earlier than expected.

A few board or card games are easy to provide and don’t take up much space. Some books or magazines can be nice too.

If you have a smart TV, make sure the instructions are clear enough that guests can actually use it without having to message you first.

You could also include a few rainy-day ideas in your local recommendations. Museums, indoor attractions, cosy cafés or other places that are worth visiting when the weather isn’t great can be genuinely useful.

Creating a cosy Airbnb isn’t only about how the room looks.

It’s also about thinking about how guests might actually spend their time there.

7. Choose One Seasonal Detail to Make Special

Finally, instead of trying to add autumn touches everywhere, choose one detail or one little area and make a little more of it.

Maybe it’s a beautiful wreath at the entrance.

Perhaps it’s a reading corner with a comfortable chair, a good lamp and a soft blanket.

It could also be a small tea station in the kitchen, a basket with extra throws beside the sofa or a little card with your favourite things to do locally during autumn.

It doesn’t really matter what you choose. The important thing is that it fits naturally into your property.

And you certainly don’t need all of these things at once.

Sometimes one thoughtful seasonal detail is enough to make the whole space feel a little more special.

A Few Things I Would Skip

There are also a few seasonal decorating ideas that I would probably leave out of an Airbnb altogether:

  • Real candles — I simply wouldn’t take the risk in a holiday rental.
  • Strong seasonal fragrances — cinnamon and pumpkin spice might smell wonderful to you, but not every guest will agree. Some people are also particularly sensitive to fragrance.
  • Too much decorative clutter — especially lots of small objects that need to be moved and cleaned during every turnover.
  • Anything fragile — there’s no need to add another thing you have to worry about between guests.
  • Decorations your cleaner has to constantly reposition — those little extra jobs can add up surprisingly quickly.
  • Lots of Halloween-specific decor — unless it genuinely suits your property and the experience you’re offering.
  • A completely new decor collection for a few weeks of the year — I would rather choose pieces that can work throughout autumn and perhaps into winter too.

You don’t need to avoid seasonal decorating altogether. I would simply choose things that are easy to maintain, easy to store and still feel like they belong in your Airbnb.

Cozy Is a Feeling, Not a Decorating Theme

You really don’t need to transform your Airbnb every September.

A few warmer textiles, softer lighting and one or two seasonal details can already make the space feel completely different.

And often, the things guests appreciate most aren’t particularly decorative at all.

It’s coming back from a cold day and finding a blanket within reach. Having a nice lamp beside the sofa instead of sitting under a bright ceiling light. Finding tea in the kitchen when they want something warm. Or discovering a rainy-day recommendation they wouldn’t have thought of themselves.

They’re all very small things.

However, together they make a property feel warm, comfortable and well thought out.

And I think that’s really what creating a cosy Airbnb is about.
